Redefining Mental Health through Cultural Competence, Prevention, and Courageous Conversations

The Mind & Safety Institute™ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping upstream providers—therapists, educators, law enforcement, and community leaders—with the tools to engage in real-world conversations about safety, mental health, and crisis prevention.

We believe the most effective interventions happen before the crisis. That’s why we focus on training that blends clinical best practices with cultural fluency, addressing the intersections of identity, personal safety, and behavioral health. Our programs are designed to empower professionals to recognize warning signs, reduce stigma, and build trust with the communities they serve

Our Flagship Program: Firearm Informed Therapy™

At the heart of the Institute is Firearm Informed Therapy™—a groundbreaking clinician

training that demystifies firearm culture, teaches legal and ethical competencies, and offers a respectful framework for addressing firearm-related risks in mental health settings. The

program has already helped clinicians nationwide reduce barriers to care for a rapidly

growing and often misunderstood population: responsible firearm owners.

But that’s just the beginning.

A Broader Mission

The Mind & Safety Institute™ is expanding to include training and resources on:

  • Suicide prevention and lethal means counseling
  • Trauma-informed care with culturally responsive adaptations
  • Community collaboration between mental health and public safety sectors
  • School and workplace readiness programs
  • Mental health planning for those with complex safety concerns

We aim to normalize hard conversations—about firearms, self-harm, substance use,

victimization, and identity—by giving providers practical tools, legal clarity, and the

confidence to navigate complex topics with compassion and competence

Why We Exist

  • Because mental health shouldn’t be politically charged.
  • Because safety is personal.
  • Because trust is built when we speak the language of the people we serve.

Welcome to the Mind & Safety Institute.
